The power of the written word has long been revered in the world. There was a time in American society when one of the greatest fears was the African American who could write and potentially inspire resistance and rebellion amongst other African Americans with his or her words. Laws were passed that forbade free and enslaved African Americans from learning to write and read beyond Biblical scriptures as a result of this fear. The ability to harness the power of language to speak out against oppression and injustice is an important skill for students to learn. Students will learn the art of argumentative and persuasive writing. They will learn how to compose research articles and nonfiction essays.
It is equally important that students learn to express themselves creatively through writing. Students will use their imaginations to compose short stories, poetry, and plays. Students can add to the cultural expression of their community as well as add to the content and research on the African American people including religion, business, family life, etc.
Our composition courses will be taught in conjunction with grammar and mechanics so that students write with clarity. Word choice and tone will be given consideration as well.
