A very important part of a person’s identity is his or her culture and heritage. All too often, cultural expression is not welcome or is penalized in schools today. A casual search on the internet will point out multiple examples of bias and discrimination suffered by African Americans in general and students in particular. These actions can cause students to question if they belong or make them wonder if they should change their appearance to better fit in with the status quo.
At The ReImagine Schhols we believe that culture is an important factor that is often overlooked in most organizations today. Culturally responsive teaching is the norm in our classrooms. We believe it is an important aspect of instruction that should never be excluded or marginalized. We think it is important to reflect on our heritage and history in order to understand how the past informs the present and defines the future. We celebrate the victories and traditions that remind us of who we are, who came before us, and what our cultural expressions are such as Eid and Juneteenth.
