We believe that historical factors such as forced illiteracy, compulsory ignorance laws, and legalized separate and unequal schooling have created opportunity gaps in educational systems for African Americans.

We believe that a well-designed curriculum can eliminate the academic gaps and cultural famine experienced by African American students year after year in traditional classrooms.

We believe that all students benefit from instruction that is culturally responsive and offers insight about historical and current events from the perspective of the people who experienced them.

We believe that all students are capable of learning and performing at the highest levels when they are in safe and comfortable environments that celebrate their differences. This provides opportunities to deeply engage students and learn more about who they are as human beings.
